Interior Design Tips for Your Remodel: An Interview with Jean Larette of Larette Design

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Larette Design can provide consulting services on your home renovation, remodel and new construction project. We provide color consulting, space planning, custom furniture selection, and window covering services, including custom drapery design and motorized shade selection and installation.

If a client wants to do a complete remodel of their home, how would you start?

I believe the most successful projects are a collaborative endeavor where the interior designer, contractor, architect and landscape designer are all brought on board at the start of the project. In this manner, the way in which rooms are to be utilized and the function of each space is addressed from the beginning. The furniture plans are determined and the lighting and art placement are all considered from the start.

What are some elements in design that can help create an updated feel for a remodeling project?

Freshening the color palette, refinishing the floors, replacing windows, doors and hardware, updating the lighting, installing new audio equipment and sound systems, installing bathroom and kitchen undermount sinks with new hardware, selecting new appliances and choosing updated cabinetry design and finishes.

How can people decide if a particular furnishing they already own is right for a particular room or space?

As a design professional, it is important to be able to incorporate pieces that are family heirlooms and existing pieces that will remain in a freshened space. The best and most interesting rooms always have a great mix of old and new, high and low, and smooth and textured.

What are some new colors that could work well in a white or neutral toned home?

Colors that works well in a neutral-toned home are grays, soft blues and warm beige tones. You can always add a splash of color with pillows, throws and accessories that are easily changed. A dash of candy apple red, bright orange, emerald green and deep navy blue often infuse visual interest.

What advice would you give to homeowners who are remodeling their house and want their rooms to have a completely different look?

Begin with a fresh color palette. Consider new flooring which may be as simple as new carpeting, fresh fabrics, new interior doors and new window coverings to start. Many existing pieces of furniture can be reupholstered in a new color palette and texture, which can allow them to feel new again.
